You're a nightmare with some serious issues - and that at least makes me smile - knowing that you're a mess - couldn't happen to a nicer guy. It;s rude to use crude language in a public forum...also to make ad hominem attacks...you have a rather duplistic set of values, Jim. You set yourself up as a target and then "bang", revert to attack. A nice person would either laugh off Scotty's attack, turn the other cheek, or try to discover just what it was that set the other off. Now, why don't we all just go back to discussing sailing. What other questions do you have? Have you ever been sailing? On waht type of boat? In what waters? |

This week a friend pointed out some things that helped my boat to sail better. I had the jib leads too far forward , and by heading up farther than I normally do, the boat leveled off better. This week a friend pointed out some things that helped my boat to sail better. I had the jib leads too far forward , and by heading up farther than I normally do, the boat leveled off better. Don't know if my VMG was better or not, but the ride was a lot smoother, with a lot less weather helm. Scotty Makes for a flatter sail...in more ways than one...I leave all the VMG discussion to the guys stewing in their mathematical hazes...it's not necessary for just sailing around...I like to tweak sails to get more out of them and to get a higher point, but making sailing into a physics or math problem just doesn't interest me...I'm sure that some would be aghast at this but hey, I sail because I like to sail...it's more a visceral thing for me than some problem to be solved. Got enough problems to solve in real life without looking for them while sailing. |

We go places, too, and use dead reckoning, our charts, GPS, etc. Using simple trig is good enough for me. We're never in that much of a hurry that we go to those lengths...if we are trying to make a destination and have a timeline, we use a simple rule...if our speed sailing goes below 4 knots, we turn on the Iron Jenny and either motor sail or run on engie=ne alone depending on direction and seas... I hear the gasps already...the reason is, though, taht when you have limited time, you make use of whatever you have to ,ake that time worthwhile. This summer we will be able to sail all summer without any hindrances. Mr Sails doesn't have to take any classes and doesn't think he's signing up to teach summer school...we'll get to explore a lot of territory and have the time to do it. |

Scotty We might move the boat up to Hampton Raods next summer from NC...have to see...the drive every weekend is pretty grueling...if so, we'll be doing that long trip but will only go as far as the York...on the way we have Pamlico and the Abermerle to explore... |

Hey Scotty,
Your Jib Sheet should bisect the angle of the Clew 50/50 under normal conditions. As the wind picks up, move it the back to to let top fall off as you put more of the tension on the foot of the sail. As the wind gets weaker, you want to move the sheet forward to tighten to leech and make the sail baggy. Often, with Auto furling head sail, people reduce sail without moving the sheet car to maintain this angle relationship.
