Is that a stye in his left eye (upper lid) or just an eye lash?

A stye (hordeolum) does not appear that way, rather it generally presents as
a swollen lid with occasional erythema (redness). What you are seeing on
Thomas' photo is a clump of lashes on the superior lid. Not uncommon on
kids.
