My seamanship question #1
"katy" wrote | I had that happen to me...I was in the water and the O'Day was | aground...we were trying to see how much mud we were in when a flotilla | of MC Scows comes roaring up...Mr Sails is yelling at them that I am in | the water and they screamed back "We're racing!" One zoomed by close | enough that I could have touched its hull.... Your husband should've been ringing the bell with the signal for being aground. Maybe they would've stayed further away if they knew it was shallow there. Cheers, Ellen |

My seamanship question #1
It's happened to all of us. The colregs are in force, and the other boat
must follow them. -- "j" ganz @@ www.sailnow.com "katy" wrote in message ... Scotty wrote: "Walt" wrote in message ... However, When a boat sailing under these rules meets a vessel that is not, she shall comply with the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (IRPCAS) or government right-of-way rules. If you don't race, the racing rules are irrelevant to you. I like the old story of a racer , approaching a cruising boat, yelling ''We're racing', and the other boat yells back, ''We're cruising'', and continues on his course. Scotty I had that happen to me...I was in the water and the O'Day was aground...we were trying to see how much mud we were in when a flotilla of MC Scows comes roaring up...Mr Sails is yelling at them that I am in the water and they screamed back "We're racing!" Cheers, Ellen They knew it was shallow there...they draft very little.... and he did blast away on the horn...they would never have heard the bell and most of them would have thought it was the Episcopalian church's carollon playing the hour...it was very evident what was going on...they just didn't care.... |
