And a number of my friends have or are thinking about moving from sail
to power

Any thinking of just selling their sailboats and buying a good rock
tumbler and maybe also maybe take up playing the banjo???
Cuz that's what it means to give up sailing. You don't compromise by
buying a trawler. Compromise would be a Fisher 37 or a Nauticat. A
trawler means you GAVE UP SAILING.
Period. And spare me the crap about sailing dinks around. Doug doesn't
do it anymore. If you haven't time for a sailboat, you haven't time for
a trawler and a dink!
Your friends are as gay as Doug.

Time is the most precious commodity. If you are putting your time into a
sailboat, your time is missing from something else.

For most, you included, sailing is a few hours escape from life. It is far
from being life itself as is an arcade game or some other distraction.

What moment sums up your life?

Not true! Time spent sailing doesn't count againt your life.

I don't speak for "most," only for myself... It is no escape. It is
life. The alternative is not worth considering. You've been away from
it too long.

"Time spent climbing is not subtracted from your life."

There are plenty of alternatives. Some are even considered superior to
sailing by others.

For me for now it is an escape, something for "fun".

I haven't got my boat in the water yet this year. Damn I
miss her. But, I've gone to a lot of picnics and get
togethers that I've missed, and been missed at, the last
few years. Hooked back up with my old riding buddies too,
what a blast. Went on a cruise with friends. Did some long
overdue home improvements.

I guess my point is that there's more to life than sailing.

That said , I can't wait to get back out on the water.

Amen, brother! Can I quote you on the above?

Good question...let me think about it.
