And a number of my friends have or are thinking about moving from sail to power, with trawlers being the boat of choice. They haven't necessarily given up on sailing, just on the practicality of owning a large sailboat given their individual circumstances. One, in Boca Raton, lives on a canal on the wrong side of a couple of fixed bridges. Wants a boat he can keep at his house, rigged and ready. This is the guy who taught me to sail when we were both teenagers. His decision makes sense to me. Other similar stories. Doug's probably just as rational, but if not it would be only an opinion and none of my business anyway. Frank |

Walt wrote: Ok, I have to claim ignorance. Where is this? A sailing resort that rents Lasers and Hobie Waves? Tell me more. Bitter End Yacht Club. It's at the eastern end of Virgin Gorda, open the to trade winds and sheltered water of Drake Sound. I think the sailing end of it is tapering off due to lack of public interest, although it's a fine place to sail or windsurf & they have everything from an Express 37 9costs extra), J-24s (free), Lasers, Vanguard 15s, Hobie Getaways and Waves, and a variety of kayaks, windsurfers etc etc. It's also not a bad place to go snorkeling. Sounds nice. Although I could *buy* a pair of new Lasers for the cost of a week's stay. Oh well, if you have to ask... I've been hoping a sailing resort would pop up on the Gulf coast... There used to be one in the Keys (Rick's Place), but Rick and Mary got out of the business. If you hear of one drop me a line. So I take it you you don't have the Johnson 18 anymore? Nope, it has reluctantly gone to a good home. Right now I'm looking for something like a Melges 24 only cheaper (and hopefully a bit less labor intensive). Maybe one of these: http://tinyurl.com/zqxpx http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/High-...QQcmdZViewItem Hey, you're the high bidder. Too bad the reserve isn't met. Wouldn't you have to pay double for the slip for one of those? That would factor into the TCO, no? //Walt |

And at one point in time, my wife would rather have had a new Laser of her own than spend a week getting pampered, nowadays we have different priorities. I've been hoping a sailing resort would pop up on the Gulf coast... There used to be one in the Keys (Rick's Place), but Rick and Mary got out of the business. If you hear of one drop me a line. There are several "schools" which are basically resorts but none have as nice a fleet, and none are in the trade winds (man, it's easy to get spoiled down there). http://tinyurl.com/zqxpx http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/High-...QQcmdZViewItem Walt wrote: Hey, you're the high bidder. Yeah but will it last? ... Too bad the reserve isn't met. There was another Stiletto 27 on Ebay a few weeks ago where the high bid was considerably higher, and more than I'd pay, and still didn't meet the reserve. This one has been for sale asking $15k for a while, plus it's fairly close to us. Don't know how it will end up. Wouldn't you have to pay double for the slip for one of those? That would factor into the TCO, no? It should, but then you'd have to admit to all those uppity multihull sailors they're twice the boat.... In this case, it would live on a trailer in a friend's back yard right on the creek near our marina. |

![]() Motor Trend just joined The Washington Post in calling the Sedona better than the Sienna. That's just about every major publication dropping the Sienna to 3rd place now. RB 35s5 NY |

![]() And a number of my friends have or are thinking about moving from sail to power Any thinking of just selling their sailboats and buying a good rock tumbler and maybe also maybe take up playing the banjo??? Cuz that's what it means to give up sailing. You don't compromise by buying a trawler. Compromise would be a Fisher 37 or a Nauticat. A trawler means you GAVE UP SAILING. Period. And spare me the crap about sailing dinks around. Doug doesn't do it anymore. If you haven't time for a sailboat, you haven't time for a trawler and a dink! Your friends are as gay as Doug. Time is the most precious commodity. If you are putting your time into a sailboat, your time is missing from something else. For most, you included, sailing is a few hours escape from life. It is far from being life itself as is an arcade game or some other distraction. What moment sums up your life? |
