Ethanol; working now Group: alt.sailing.. However, my old high school chemistry course told me that octane rating is derived by equating a fuel's capacity to spontaneously ignite at a given temperature to the capacity of a specific mixture of octane and heptane. Spontaneously ignite;-----Wrong! That is a "Ping!" A Ping indicates Wrong Octane! Dopey Dave, If you wasn't so sure my answer to Vito was wrong; look again! My post to Vito was a question, :^) ending with a ? mark (G) So, my friend, you are in error in both cases. In other words as you've pointed out; Not to be considered in any reference.
