I agree, simple logic dictates he was returning to land/harbor.

After Jon gets a few more years as Captain he will be able to judge
maritime situation with more clarity.

Don't think logic fits into this equation, the picture in the post was
hanging on the wall of my marina's office, name of the boat is "Temporary
Insanity"

?? It's unclear from the photo if they guy was leaving or returning. After
Joe gets a better eye glass perscription, he will be able to understand.

Ask John, The pictures in his marina office.
As you can see plainly in the picture land is in the background
indicating he was returning.

Simple logic
