Tnx John for providing the link. At the time you posted
it was "breaking news".

I am glad to see us and/or other naval forces starting to
make a more aggressive precence in that region. There
is also talk that the super powers will start getting more
involved in patrolling the Malacca Straits once procedures
are ironed out with Indonesia and Malaysia. I guess inter-
national politics gets involved in this sort of thing...
naturally.

This past week the IMB reported the following:

3-13-06 at 0930 LT in position 01:21N - 044:40.32E, off Marka,
east coast of Somalia:

Armed pirates in a boat chased a general cargo ship underway.
They fired shots at bridge, lifeboat and superstructure, which
caused bullet holes.

When boat tried to come alongside master altered course and
rammed the boat and boarding was averted.

Note: Every Tuesday the IMB post a weekly account of reports
that have been turned in through out the world at the following
web site:

http://www.icc-ccs.org/prc/piracyreport.php

Best regards

Bill

Piracy in that region is nothing new. Just after the WW2 I was on a ship of
the Royal Navy and as we passed the island of Socotra it was pointed out as
the home of a nest of pirates in that region.
But they have certainly got bolder lately in relation to the type of ship
they target on. In those earlier days they probably concentrated on dhows
trading between the Persian gulf and East Africa.
