Found this newsgroup just a bit ago and have been reading. Can't get a
handle on it though. Seems as though it's not too serious about sailing. Can someone recommend a good newsgroup for learning and posting newbie questions, like "I have a fear of sailing with my husband" Thanks. Diane Clark Central New York Oneida Lake sailing |

Dianna,
This NG periodically has something of interest to sailors, but not very often. I have a filter set so if there is somthing - it stands out. You might better try alt.sailing (no asa). There is a great deal less traffic there, but it is almost always about sailing and it is read by people that might be interested in helping you and not venting political propaganda or bragging about some foolish event. Diane Clark Central New York Oneida Lake sailing Dear "I have a fear of sailing with my husband", Although this group appears at first glance to be a sow's ear, you will find it lined with silk... which in no way means it's a silk purse... just an exquisitely lined sow's ear. Nonetheless.... this group has by far more sailing oriented resources than any other NG. Now please elaborate as to why you are squeamish about sailing with your husband... other than that he is a New Yorker and thus genetically unable to handle any vessel properly. Is he prone to yelling, tantrums and blaming you for his inability and lack of confidence? Does he lack the ability to instil in you a confidence and comfort while on a vessel? I would suggest you contact Bobsprit on this group to take you out for a sail. Robert is a totally house trained and obedient husband who owns an off the rack sailboat and will never venture out of sight of land. This should give you a benchmark to judge your own husband's status. Then you and Roberts's wife Suzanne can decide on how to let your husband meet hers so he can adopt some of Robert's submissive and obedient behaviour. This should go a long way to assisting you in establishing control. CM |

Dear Diane,
Oh boy can I relate to your question. What you do is bring along lots of girlfriens who can quickly take control of your boat if your husband faints, has a heatattack, or panic attacks. Thats what I do, but do not let your husband in on our little secret, it will crush him. Make him think all the girls are wild about him. The best thing to do is make sure you can swim btw. Wish I had a Bobsprit but I don't, I have a rugby player, does that tell you anything? lucky Suzanne! where do they sail from? Well Dianne, I sail a Nordica 30 from Prospect Bay in Nova Scotia. Rules on my vessel are implicit... there is no yelling, the Captain is responsible for the orderly progress and operations on the vessel. All quests and crew are to be relaxed and enjoying themselves at all times. If a screw up occurs.. it is my fault.... nobody else's. I am confident of my abilities and those of my vessel. It irritates me when I see some clod screaming at his wife because he lacks the abilities to correctly approach and position his boat to a dock. I discuss where and what we are doing underway with the crew so everyone is on the same playing field. If a crew member blows a hoist or tack.... it's a chance to laugh it off and try it again. That's how you learn. I make a sincere effort to insure my crew is intoxicated, relaxed and the only demands I make is that when my beer alarm sounds... crew will immediately procure a re-supply. That being said.... I suggest you get as many of your girlfriends together and request your husband take you all out for a sail. This is called a "Hen Frigate"... which is when a Captain allows a female to effect the orderly progress of the vessel. This tactic has many benefits.. he is out-numbered, he must be on his best behaviour, he will be forced to endure girl talk, he will unknowingly be sensitized, he will be unable to turn you down since the benefits to male status from having an all female crew is coveted. Do these "Hen Frigate" cruises a few times... as his status among the males increases he will gain confidence and be less prone to bursts of inconfidence. I hope this helps.... :-) CM |

From the log of the SV "Never Better" Endeavor 38, Summer of '89, BVI, under the category of "things we learned on this cruise". "The rum ration, a longstanding tradition whereby the British Navy controlled both the timing and the amount of libations by the crew, is both practical and necessary. We discovered this after observing Helen and Sheri, when left to their own devices, with regard to the pain killers". "A consensus decision concerning the itinerary is mathematically impossible with eight people and two boats". "Sidney has discovered the meaning of life and he is not telling anyone"! |
