I don't use spell check for usenet posting.

A dress store owner ordered a shipment of evening gowns for his shop.
When
they
arrived, the poor man found there had been a mistake. Half the garments
were
coats, 20 percent were children's sizes and 24 of the garments were
both
coats
and in sizes for children. There were only 99 of the evening dresses he
had
ordered. How many had he ordered initially?

I can solve the puzzle. Can you?

A man is walking and on his way to Bristol. He comes to a fork in the
road
where two brothers are standing. He is uncertain which path to take to
reach
Bristol, and needs help from one of them. The walking man has heard of
these
brothers, and knows that one always tells the truth, and the other always
lies. The walking man is allowed to ask one question and one question
only.
He can direct the question to only one of the brothers, but he does not
know
which is the liar and which is always truthful. What question does he
ask?
Scout

OK... well I won't spoil the other puzzle for Katy - I would ask a bro
to tell me which way the other bro would tell me to go to Bristol. If I
asked the honest guy, he'd tell me the truth - that the other brother
would tell me to go the wrong way - so I'd go the other way.
Conversely, if I'd asked the liar, he'd lie and tell me the wrong way
that the other bro would say. So again, I'd go the other road.

But you can ask only one question! If you asked the honest one, he'd tell
you which way the other would tell you to go, but you'd have no way of
knowing that you had asked the honest brother. He'd be telling the truth,
but you'd be no better off!
Scout

??? wot! ??? :) - No matter which one I asked - I'd go "the other way".
If it were the honest one, he'd tell me his bro would tell me to go down
"that" road (being the wrong road as he'd tell me the truth, and knowing
his brother would lie he'd tell me that road). Hope that makes sense.

That is one question... - to either one... "can you please tell me which
way your brother would tell me to go to get to Bristol?"

If I asked the other brother - well hopefully I've explained that
already - I'd still go "the other way".

Found this newsgroup just a bit ago and have been reading. Can't get a
handle on it though. Seems as though it's not too serious about
sailing. Can someone recommend a good newsgroup for learning and
posting newbie questions, like "I have a fear of sailing with my husband"

This group is very serious about sailing. If you have a question, then you
will find that this is the best place to ask it.

However, if you think that "I have a fear of sailing with my husband"
is a question, then you will be dissappointed.

Do you have a question?

Matte,

Just took your advice and switched to alt.sailing. 29 posting; 14 off
topic, 9 about GRP and the others are; well to say the least,
uninteresting. No one is going to learn anything about sailing over
there.

Will they learn anything on ASA? Probably not but any good question
asked will get answered here. Answered by a Sailor, We're never, ever
tried to be a information sailing group.

What we've tried to be is a group of Sailors Discussing things of common
interest to sailors. 1500 postings! Admitted a lot of banter off topic
but most of some interest to the posters.

Sailor's discussions in a Yacht Club Bar would mimic this group rather
well. We aren't against sailing topics but DAMN if we'll be forced to
only them.

I, myself, am not to happy with the Chest Thumping but, by christ;---
I've learned a hell of a lot about the Bennys, Cameras, Inlets and Tides
around the World as well as Sail trim, sail construction, hull
construction, weather, wind world wide, I've learned bout people on ASA.
I've even sailed with some on my boat and "Broken Bread" with other, so
to speak.

ASA isn't perfect BUT;; TO ME: IT'S THE BEST DAMN DISCUSSION GROUP FOR
SAILORS ON THE 'NET.

So, keep your 29 post List. It will be faster, for sure than a 1500 post
List. I'll stay with the ASA even after I've Beached Myself. Also, with
any luck you'll will read of my Obit, in the ASA;--- when its time!!!

SO THERE!!!! I've run off at the mouth and said my piece. UP YOURS, M.
Colie! If ASA bothers you, we sure as hell don't force you join us but
as you can see we don't RESTRICT YOU either.

Easy does it Thom, we'll have no talk like that. It's that damn rain,

Actually it's one of the better places I know of. Is that a
compliment to the group, or a sad commentary on the rest
of the world?

Do you have a question?

Of course. You just have to parse the original poster's
words correctly. And "I have a fear of sailing with my
husband" is indeed a question. We just need a little more
information to zero in on a quantitative answer. Is the
primary issue sailing/husband, or fear/husband... or if it's
fear/sailing, then what can the husband do to reclaim his
wife's attention(s)?

You all don't get 'Car Talk' over there, do you?

No, it isn't!! It is a statement of fact.

It says that the lady's husband is untrustworthy.

My wife, who isn't a sailor, trusts me when I tell her what to expect. I
suspect that your wife trusts you to tell the truth.

There are many men who take their wives out sailing in inappropriate
conditions .... and they later regret the fact that their wives won't go
sailing with them.

The primary issue is "husband". If the man was trustworthy, then the wife
would not be worried about going sailing with him.

I don't think so.. If it is a TV programme, then I wouldn't know. I've

Every statement of fact is also a question, if you look at
it right.

Agreed.

Yes, she does. She reserves the right to test my statements
though ;)

There are many men who take their wives out sailing in inappropriate
conditions .... and they later regret the fact that their wives won't go
sailing with them.

There are also a lot of men who
1- don't know how to sail very well
2- don't take their wives' feelings into account (and this
goes for far more than taking them sailing)

We just need a little more

Agreed, but more to the point the man should be either a
good sailor *and* willing to work at getting his wife to
like sailing, *or* have an attitude such that they can enjoy
learning together.

Smart move. But 'Car Talk' is a radio program where people
call in to ask advice about problems with their car, and
often the calls involve spouses. It's hilarious.
