Default Seamanship Question #25

You have just solo sailed into a strange new port in a
foreign country. You found a spot at the clearnance
dock but it is a tight fit. No one is around to help.

What is the best way to get your boat in there?

Default Seamanship Question #25

That's pretty vague on details Bart.... lots of ways to get into tight
places. What's the tide? The Current? The wind?.... I'm taking that you have
been cleared to dock and yellow quarantine ensign is displayed.

Fire a few rounds in the air, someone's bound to show up and help you!

What's the best weapon for announcing arrival at the customs dock,
12ga., or maybe a Norma 454?

Cheers

Trick question. Dock as you normally would. It's not a problem.

Make sure you remember ear protection for the parrot, else the SPCA will

Not enough info. Wind? Current? Depth? Exposure? Is the dock floating
or not? Is there anything sticking out or proud of the side? Are there
bollards/cleats or 4X4s? Height off the water? What kind of boat is it?
I wouldn't put mine in there by myself unless there was bags of room.

I summary, I'd ask for help or anchor.

Consider that in a foreign port, any damage you
cause could get your boat impounded.

The other key fact being, you are by yourself and
docking solo.

Like I said, trick question. Proceed and you shall dock successfully. Any
hesitation will only bring disaster.

The smart think to do is to anchor, and if you
really must get into the dock, warp it in.
