Edward Hopper is one of those oddball painters. I don't like most of his
paintings, yet there are a few in there. And a couple of his paintings
show mastery of the art, and caused me to go back and take a fresh look
at some of his dumber looking sailboat paintings.

Should a painting neessarily look real? If so, then why bother to paint

No, but clearly he was trying to make it look real and failed. It not
impressionist work, it's failed rendering IMO.

from looking at the painting?

Hopper isn't one of my favorites, but after seeing some of his paintings
which are definitely master works, I went back & looked at his sailboat
paintings again. Still worth a look, IMHO, and obviously a lot of people
(not necessarily sailors) like them.
