GPS-an honest answer...?

Sure you can, but Bubbles was asking about it's use with a GPS.

GPS - Dynamic Waypoint
Compass - Static Waypoint
IOW.....
A GPS will only provide bearing between waypoints, this of course requires
movement. A compass will give you bearing from a fixed point.

You had better have a charting GPS on board when your chart gets blown
overboard
in that squall! Anyone who relies on just paper charts is a fool. And god
forbid
somebody falls with the winch handle in thier hand and smashes the
compass!

Bwahahahahahahahahaha...... Jax is that you?

You're living outer space if you think even 75% of boaters are carrying
paper charts anymore, but I was referring to actual use of them. I love
Doug's comment about hand compasses, so obviously a hand bearing
compass and I hope he has one...but I doubt it.

It's just highly recommended for rec boaters. Electronics can fail. Of
course, it's highly recommended that people not be over weight and
watch their cholesterol levels, but I bet 75% of people don't do that
either.

Are you really that stupid or are you just fooling?

Both the captain and the owner were held
responsible.
You should ask if there is anyone foolish enough
not to carry a paper chart.
S.

Here's an even better one... when was the last time you updated your
charts with the local notice to mariners?

I download the updates every couple of weeks to my charting software. I print
out fresh paper charts as needed.

But what do you do if you hit your head on the notebook lid when you
try to open it, then reel back in shock and your handheld gps flies
out of your hand? Then, as you over-react again, reeling forward,
knock your head on your binnacle and smash the compass? Then what do
you do? Huh? Huh? At least my paper charts will float long enough for
me to do an MOB on them.

Bwahahahahahahahahaha....... I bet you thank the gods that breathing is a
reflexive action each and every day don't you!? Did you actually engage any
brain cells prior to whipping off that latest indication of your mental
incapacity?

Garmin GPSMAP76s has a compass. You can even configure the unit so the
compass
automatically takes over when you have been below "X" speed for "X"
seconds.

Then it's a Fluxgate Compass on a GPS Receiver... GPS cannot give you
compass directions without movement. Deal with it.
