Winter is taking its toll

Judging from the perpetuation of mindless, worthless, senseless threads in
ASA, it would appear that old man winter has done his damage to this body of
northern sailors. Spring isn't far away, to be sure, but cabin fever
generally exacts its greatest toll just before the weather breaks.

Buck up, mates, for better times aren't far off.

(Those living in the southern hemisphere or subtropics may disregard the
preceding.)

So, sailors in the southern hemisphere or subtropics can't expect better
times ahead? Bummer. Maybe we should take up a collection?

I've noticed the angst. I enjoy prodding it along to make
all the northern ******s suffer. Now that they have been
reduced to simple, childish, name-calling, it makes my day
and my point that real sailors don't live up north.

I think Joe enjoys seeing them suffer as well as he sure
likes to egg them on . . . Such luxuries as we real southern
sailors enjoy are priceless.

If you don't get hit by a hurricane.

Remember, a hurricane only lasts 12 hours, maybe less. Of course, the
preparation takes a day or two and the clean-up can take longer, but not
every place gets a hurricane every year. You can't say the same about
winter!

... if you own the proper boat and know

Yeah, right. There certainly is such a thing as being prepared, but if a
Cat 5 hurricane nails you, you're lucky to be alive. Or if a neighbors
less-well-prepared boat slams into yours, blowing debris, etc etc.

Sure. They do the same for winter storms up north. It's their job, man.

Joe, unfortunately it seems you are one of those in extreme danger
from a cyclone.
You've been lulled into a false sense of security by cyclones that
have been little more than a tropical storm at your location.

Capt. Neal® March 8th 05 02:13 AM

A category five is no big deal. I rode out Andrew which was a category five and
I suffered no damage other than a torn bimini top. It was six years old and ready
to go, anyway.

The only thing to worry about in a category 5 is the core which is usually less than
fifty miles in diameter. It's easy enough to avoid with the modern tracking methods
and radar and satellite imagery.

Right you are, Joe. I've lived in hurricane country for almost twenty years now.

I've seen them come and I've seen them go. I have no fear of them. They are
hyped up all out of proportion to the danger they might cause to a well-found
vessel anchored or moored out in a safe "hurricane hole'. Every real sailor
has a hurricane hole and a plan to use it along with all the necessary gear
aboard. The winds and waves aren't the danger - the real danger is the idiots
ashore and their docks full of unsecured boats and their roofs blowing off,
etc.

And, that's the truth!

How so? I've never seen a snow cover tear up varnish the way intense UV
from the southern sun will do.

... and Mr Sails is a
varnish fanatic...its' done as a matt4er of course rather than a matter of
need...

My wife has gone from racing tactician to teak nazi. Nowadays when we
walk around looking at boats, she is as likely to criticize the
brightwork as make a comment about the rig or design. And one thing we
agree on (actually we agree on many things) is that we have never seen a
Cetol finish that looked as good as even a half-assed varnish finish
much less a good one. You can read a newspaper in the reflection off our
brightwork, which is not half-assed IMHO.

If Maxprop's boat has decent wood on it, she deserves better.
