Default Coronado 27 help

My first project, apart from re-doing all the upholstry, is going to be
re-working the head and fresh water storage tank. My current tank leaks
badly and the hoses need to be replaced from the trank to the head and to
the sink in the galley. Does anyone have any advice regarding these
matters. Also, the fill cap fro the fresh water is inside the boat (more or
less you dirctly fill the tank under the dinette seat. I would like to
re-direct this so that the fill is outside. I also have to replace the head
itself. i believe that it's origin al and needs upgraded badly.

On holding tanks and heads, the undisputed master is Peggie Hall. If
she doesn't respond directly here, post on rec.cruising.boats with a
subject like "a question for Peggie Hall," and then listen carefully to
her advice and buy her book.

Absolutely. And, don't listen to anything from Moron about US politics.

Throw that head overboard. But a nice cedar bucket.

Yes. Don't buy the cheap stuff generally sold by the West Marine and

similar
stores as marine sanitation hose. Get the good stuff. And get

yourself a
heat gun, because the good stuff is stiff. You'll need the heat gun

to
soften the hose enough to get it over the barbs of the connectors.

Use a pot of boiling water, works better and more even heating and will
not damage the hose like a heat gun.

My 2 cents

As to the on-deck filler, I'm not sure it's worth the effort. My old

boat
had a fill system like yours, and it just wasn't that much of a

problem.
It's not as if you have to fill the FW tank every week. My present

boat has
an on-deck fill, and while it's nice I don't think I'd go cutting

holes in
the deck to install such a system if I didn't have it. I'd suggest

the
effort is probably better spent putting a second vent on the holding

tank.
Since you're replacing it there will never be a better opportunity.

My deck fill is inside the anchor locker. I find it easier to run the
water hose through the forward hatch and directly into the tank.

So you never know whether your drinking water is pure or stuff from the
anchor chain has leaked in?. If your anchor chain comes up from salt water
you can taste it but if you are on fresh water you may be drinking all sorts
of bugs without knowing it.

???

Upholstry should be a pretty low priority IMHO. Get the working parts of
the boat working properly first.

Yes. Get a copy of Nigel Calder's book 'Boatowner's Mechanical &
Electrical Guide'... maybe at the library or 2nd hand bookstore.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...441233-1939113

It's an excellent reference with detailed specs, diagrams, and how-to
instructions. It has a lot of stuff you won't need to worry about, like
refrigeration, but it covers wiring & plumbing quite well.

Another book to get is Peggie Hall's which is specifically on sanitation
plumbing.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...glance&s=books

It may seem strange to spend money on books first, rather than parts &
tools, but knowledge is the most important tool, after all. Especially
if you're on a tight budget, it's important to not waste money on mistakes.

... Also, the fill cap fro the fresh water is inside the boat (more or
less you dirctly fill the tank under the dinette seat. I would like to

A mistake IMHO. Putting the fill outside is just a potential leak and a
potential source of contamination.

.... I also have to replace the head
itself. i believe that it's origin al and needs upgraded badly.

How do you use the boat? If you're daysailing & weekending, like 99.9%
of boaters, then a porta-potty is the best solution. Much less
expensive, less trouble, less chance of mistakes, and it leaves more
room in the boat for stowage of other things.

I drink bottled water onboard. But I do cook with tank water.

That is why I DON'T fill from the anchor locker. That cap is sealed.

Both salt & fresh water.
