Are you nuts? Many times I've seen winch handles fall out through the
cracks in the locker door, fly up the companionway and splash right into
the briny deep, lost forever. You should keep them under armed guard in
a bank vault.

Cripes Scott,

Don't buy a Blue one. Jon will make a three page reply about using a Red
handle on the Port winch and a Green one on the Starboard. With my
single Red handle at least my crew is OK Half the time. A Blue one will
blow Jon's Mind, among other things.

On the bay. It happened to us once. I've seen one get whipped out of
pocket on the mast also. No bs. I can't say with absolute certainty
that the lock was truly broken, but the handle did have a lock.

I hate the color coded thing...for Pete's sake, if you can't remember that
right is starboard and left is port, why would you associate red and green?
Can't stand it when people rig their boats out in red and green....but I
suppose some people need that kind of mnemonic to function...just very

Are you kidding??? The winch robbers would get them for sure. You should
always stow them away in your holding tank...that way you can be sure NO ONE
would ever go near them again.

Actually, you should shove the winch handle down the front of your shorts
when not in use and pull ot out when it's needed.....
or if that bothers you, stick it in back behind the waistband, but don't
lean over, it might clobber you in the back of the head....

No. What happens is that students forget to control the lazy sheet. It
ends up hanging in the water unless I say something. If the wind is up
it can easily whip around enough to snag the grip on the handle.

Actually, we have to re-canvas the main sail cover this year and I was
thinking of raspberry or hot pink...Mr Sails has given up when I suggest
things like this and just shrugged his shoulders in despair...after all, you
