Picky, picky!!!! Read the rest of the report. Would you have let a screwed up lock on a winch handle ruin that trip? Use your brain for something more than negative thoughts. Look at that bank of winches. Do you really think Scotty isn't going to get that handle out of there. A Jammed handle and a coil of line that size is a temporary thing. At best!! Ole Thom |

I just got back from a road trip. Went to Oklahoma and bought a 1961 Ford Econoline pickup that was sitting in a barn since 81. It was a bitch on the highway with the granny gears.... 500 miles at 53 MPH..But hey nothing is going to catch it in the 1/4 mile run. Still all original.. even the paint. http://www.lovefords.org/galleries/m...ry_special.jpg I seem to remember you have a classic truck right? Ugh! those things are UGLY. There's one around here, I thought the guy made it himself from an Econoline van. Well coming from a squirty cheese chef I will take your UGLY discription with a grain of salt. I have a '53 Chevy PU. Hey Scott,
If you're going to get another handle, I'd like to suggest a floater. That is what I did about 4 years ago. It is a little longer and painted Red. My crew always looks for that handle, we haven't lost a handle since. In calm conditions I've used it for a MOB drill. It sharpens the look-outs eyes and the crews response now that thet know th replacement cost. Ole Thom |

If there is that much line on the handle the Main must be up. If it is up, probably means your sailing. (No engine) Line over the side should be no problem. better than walking over it in the cockpit or getting your feet tangled in it I'm inclined to agree with you about the handle left in the winch. I was taught that, but that was about Sheet winches, which are more active winches. It has carried over on to all winches. In all honesty,Jon, I've lost more handles in the act off inserting and removing them from the winches. In fact, in 58 years of sailing I can't remember ever losing a winch handle any other way. Can you? I've lost my share of them too!! Ole Thom |

I teach on a 30' boat (mostly) and I try to get students to think ahead; thus, there's little need for a handle unless it's a trim issue. We typically don't use a handle when tacking.
