A true PHRF rating is given for your area. The estimate generated by the
fornula exists as a starting point. Not all boats have a PHRF rating. I
doubt
there's one anywhere for a Fisher 37. And there are many one-off cruisers
that
have no rating.

Bob, I crew with one of the phrf measurers on the west end of Lake Erie-the
owner of the boat I race on. If I decide I want to fork over some money to
do a race next weekend, I need to have a rating, correct? Now they don't
have time to look at my boat and give me a rating certificate, where do you
think they come up with my rating? Thin air? They're going to look at the
various phrf websites around the country and give me a rating about the same
as everyone elses. The "starting point" you're referring to is called a base
handicap, and if you haven't modified you boat to make it faster or slower,
the figure derived from the formula IS the rating. So again, every boat has
a rating, you just need enough intelligence to do the math. Yeah, even for
those one-off cruisers. Keep trying.
