Well, that was truly gross.....was your psyche affected forever? And Mr.
Sails wants to know "Where is this bar?"

It was 30 years ago, almost to the day. I was an 18 year old tough guy
working a summer job to make some book money for college. I was working

the
7AM-3PM shift at a factory called Strick Trailer. An August storm, born of
high heat and humidity, was upon us. A co-worker had ridden his Harley
motorcycle to the factory that morning, but his wife, concerned for his
safety, had driven the 60 miles from their home at the Jersey Shore to

pick
up him and his bike with their truck.
Ah, irony. At 3:05, as we ran to our cars to avoid the drenching, I saw

him
loading his bike on the truck, when a flash was seen and a boom was heard,
so loud that all the War Vets instinctively dropped to the asphalt. It

took
a second or two before I heard the screams of his wife. I ran over to the
truck to help, as did a few others.
I'm no doctor, but this man was dead dead dead. His eyes looked like big
fried eggs. He smelled like a cross between burning chemicals and roast
beef. His hair and his clothes were smoking. His bike was charred, as was
the back of his truck.
The ambulance showed up and took him away. I made my way across Rt 1 to a
go-go bar known for serving minors. I drank heavily and played pool,

vaguely
aware that naked girls were smiling at me for dollars. I looked at their
bare breasts and saw only his big fried egg eyes. Somehow I got home,

puked
in the driveway, slept out back in a lawn chair and woke up in time for

work
the next morning.

That theory doesn't work...lightning does strike the same place twice, three
times, four times...our former peach tree is the now non-living truth....

The doc said I'm fine except for the fact that I tend to want to talk about
lightning a lot, which can really **** off a lot of people.
The bar is still open for business, although they have new girls there now -
it's called The Red Raven and it's on Rt 1 in Fairless Hills.

So that becomes the only protection...to put up something else for the
lightning to find so it won't find you...we should have put a flagpole up
next to the peach tree....

Yeah, but the results show that if you stick a lightning rod up into a
thunderstorm, it is very likely that you will find lightning.

I'll be sure not to tell him...he was reading over my shoulder and has now
left to go pound on rocks in the backyard (at least, that's what it sounds
like he's doing...) I give him these little projects so he'll stay
happy...Busy hands are happy hands, you know....

Where's the pity? AFAIK, if your boat is damaged by lightning your insurance
should cover it, a great way to upgrade your electronics without spending
any of your own money.

The strikes in the marina, though very few, have all as far as I
recall been on protected boats.

Pity the ones alongside are affected by the discharge and also suffer
some damage to electronics.

Depends on your policy. Even if you had to pay a $250 deductible, you would
be way ahead on the deal, especially if you have original equipment
electronics, like I have on my boat. In fact, I'm waiting for a strike,
being the cheapskate type that I am!

Not so, says a voice of experience....when we had out little problem, the
adjustor said that they would only replace at the cost of 1986 instruments,
because that's what they were, and would not replace at the current
replacement cost. We were very PO'd (one of the reasons we've just now
finally got everything replaced).

Again, I think it depends on your policy. The first guy I used to crew with
had all of his instruments replaced free of charge by his insurer after a
lightning strike. You might consider looking at your policy and considering
replacing it with an another that covers replacement. I sailed with a gal on
"Quetzal" this past March that lost her boat in Isabel, she ddin't have an
agreed value policy, didn't collect enough money to replace the boat.
