It is the lifelong politicians that seem to get rich while
working for government wages that I wonder about. The other thing you gotta wonder about is why they spend millions of their own money sometimes to get a job that pays about $150K. S/V Express 30 "Ringmaster" "Trains are a winter sport" |

SAIL LOCO wrote: And under the table money. IMHO there's a lot of that, but the ego stroking these Washington DC guys get subjected to is incredible. Hollywood stars don't get schmoozed like the most junior Congresscritter. Remember there are several hundred lobbyists for every single elected rep, they all get huge staff support, where ever they go they get special treatment, and everybody is constantly begging them for favors. Of course the opportunity to make money is there too. For example, Bill Clinton came to the Presidency poorer than any President since Abe Lincoln, and walked out with 2 or 3 million $$$... and that was while under close surveillance by some of the finest legal and financial talent in Washington ![]() DSK |

And under the table money. Works like this. I get elected and on the committee that oversees, say, FBI. FBI is giving you problems so you call your congressman (me). My secretary tells you I'm too busy to see you, let alone help you for weeks; but that I have lunch with Ima Crook every day and recommends you call her. Now it'd illegal for me to accept money to help you, it's part of my job, but Ima is a registered lobbiest who makes her living "helping" folks like you. She says she can get FBI off your back for $5000 cash (small bills). You pay up and next day she talks to me and I have an aid phone your FBI agent's boss and explain how angry this makes me just when I'm working on his budget. Of course, Ima doesn't share a cent of your $5000 cash with me - that'd be illegal (c: |
