If the boat was lying with the beam to the wind, then the sails could be used to turn the boat. However, when you got to the end of the line, would not the aft then be swung around down wind, as the force is being applied to the boat aft of the bow line? No,.... not if the tide was strong enough. A good sailor could balance the forces. The boat could end up pointing into the tide, or the wind ... or anywhere in between. Regards Donal -- |
