You say that now, but remember, boat ownership is a form of mental illness!

I'm also not entirely happy with the West/Boat US combination. But I don't
expect handouts from them. They'll price at whatever they think will make
them the most money, and I'll happily take my custom elsewhere if I think
their prices are too high. Problem is there are fewer and fewer

elsewheres.

I can think of one good reason not to buy from this combo. WM has been
selling merchandise for a while that carries their name. Prime example are
their inflatable pfd's. WM's are manufactured by SOSpenders, and WM carries
this brand, but they don't carry Mustang. BOAT/US used to carry Mustang, but
they don't now. Wonder why? Happily, I can purchase a lot of the stuff I
used to get at WM-BOAT/US from http://www.sailnet.com/ one of many on-line
chandleries, usually for less even when you factor in the shipping.

It goes without saying that people need to be nice to you!

I'm having trouble calculating the multiple I've spent on my
boat after buying her for $75. :-)

Like you, I got a great deal on a boat. Which means that I've probably
spent 5 or 6 times the purchase price on maintenance and upgrades - not
sure exacty, I stopped counting when I got to a factor of three.

And in case you're wondering, yes, it was worth it.

I got the same impression with their catalogs being similar and with less
stuff.

Are you claiming the consumers are obligated to buy from West if found

something
in their catalog?

I don't mind giving some business to West/BoatUS - they do provide a

service
with stores, 6 in my area, and a nice catalog. However, for a major

purchase,
I'll always check out the alternatives. Until recently, I gave a lot of
business to a family run chandlery, Marine Exchange (known locally as
"Arlene's"), but, sadly, they're out of business now.

I was disappointed when I checked out the latest West and Boat/US

catalogs.
They are now almost identical and the selection seems limited. A few days

ago I
was in the local Boat/US and asked for pricing of some items in the

Clearance
section. It turned out that many of the items were there because they are
discontinued by the merger, but the price is actually the original price,

which
seems like deceptive marketing. I handed the items to the clerk and

walked out.

Gongrats on the sailboat. Looks nice. Joining 'the club' is simple. The only
requirements are, (1) owning a sailboat and (2) paying the dues. Initial
joining fee is $245.00, yearly dues are $20.
Send cash (no canadjun crap) check, money order or gold doubloons to the
treasurer;

I like Sailnet, and order from them mostly, especially since they have all
those mail lists. It pays to shop around. My last purchase, (some sheets and
blocks), I found cheaper at http://www.pyacht.net/ even tho the blocks
were ''on sale'' at Sailnet.
