Flying TVs at Sea!!!!

It's been suggested by a few idiots that a TV had now place on a modern crusing
boat. Now I'm no long range cruiser, but facts are facts!

Space: Have you guys ever heard of "flat screen TV?" Uses little power and
takes up even less space.
Safety: A properly mounted TV won't fly around in bad weather or a knockdown.
Power: Many long distance cruisers now carry nice laptops in addition to the
standard charts. These laptops can treat the cruiser to a movie now and again
with almost no power penalty.
The fact is that TV has become a no-brainer for easy entertainment on many a
cruising boat, espcially in recent years with flat panel displays. Anyone who
says otherwise is living in the past and hasn't read websites showing today's
cruisers and what they carry. Books, music? Of course! But a TV can be a great
treat for those aboard and doesn't need to stay home anymore.

Wake up and smell the 80's, kids. They've ended...long ago!

You've forgotten your medication again. And again, you're confused. We
talked about blue water sailing, not the modern cruiser solely used as
dock caravan.

It's not the space..

Safety: A properly mounted TV won't fly around in bad weather or a knockdown.

It will not detach from the platform it's mounted to, agreed. Too bad
the platform itself will be flying through the cabin.

Sure, what's wrong with broadcast? Remember, we usually go out for 2 or 3
weeks at a time; we spend more than half of the summer living on board. New
England has the best TV weather reports in the country, and that alone makes it
worth having. Plus, the odd news or sports event, etc - there's nothing wrong
with staying in touch. Actually, the TV/VCR probably got more use for movies,
but we now have a little DVD player that will replace that.

It very common for 9 to 5ers to think that boating requires "vacating" the
normal routine. When you're retired, its just living aboard part of the time.
And besides, giving up the internet is a lot harder fro me than giving up TV.

Okie dokie, let's carry this one step further, the next time you put
one of those not yet released to the public DVDs that you claim to get
in your DVD player at home and watch the contents on that large screen
TV in your little room, refer to that process as "Watching TV", non of

I guess it's a matter of degree. I would think that a paranoid schizophrenic
would be debilitated, at least somewhat. They would require medication and
supervision to lead a "normal" life, NPD doesn't require medication, but it
might be harder to treat, I will concede that point. And I would also
concede that it would be difficult to deal with, but probably equally
difficult for individuals in close contact with the person having the
disorder.

That's correct Bob... long range cruising sailboats don't generally carry a
friggin TV. I've been on enough of them to ascertain that! Coastal sailors
do carry TV's. I doubt you would see a TV on a boat that wasn't big enough
to carry an electric dishwasher as well.

Hell, Jon, if Boob had done ANY long distance blue water sailing he would
realize two very important facts. 1. When you're underway, there is very
little extra time for leisure activities like watching movies. Think of how
much time is available on a typical off-watch. 2. When you arrive at your
destination, there are usually more interesting or important things to do
than sit around watching movies. I think Boob has some strange ideas about
what life at SEA is about, these ideas have been reinforced by the crap he's
seen at boat shows. About the only statement he made that had any basis in
reality was:
"Now I'm no long range cruiser"
I would add, he's no short distance cruiser either.
