Proper winch set up

this crap: Real sailors know that port winches are to be turned counter clockwise and starboard winches are to be turned clockwise. Are your winches set up that way? Do you know why it is so and where this originates? I can assure you Alien and Ghost are set up properly. RB, Lord and Master Mine turn both ways. I'm never wrong.
