Bobsprit lies. He's also chronically ignorant. Here's
proof positive of his arrogant stupidity Bobsprit claims the Standard Horizon Magnum 40 GPS is an obsolete unit with outdated features compared to a Garmin model in the same price range. Then he goes on to compare the Magnum 40 to the Garmin 76, a more expensive model even when I was making a comparison to the Garmin 72 which is in the same price range. I have compiled a table from specifications listed in the West Marine catalog and other reliable sources that shows, beyond a doubt, that the Magnum 40 is superior in almost every way than the Garmin 72. Garmin 72 Magnum 40 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- $160 $170 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WAAS enabled WAAS enabled -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2.2 X 1.6 grayscale display 2.6 X 1.8, 3-color (black, gold, gray) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 120 X 160 resolution 240 X 180 resolution -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- One year warranty Three year warranty -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NMEA data output(optional cable) NMEA data output (cable included) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Memo Pad - NO Memo Pad - YES -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Waypoints/Routes - 500/50 Waypoints/Routes - 1000/200 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Battery life - 16 hours Battery life - 19 hours (50 in saver mode) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PC cable optional PC cable included -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Quad Helix antenna Quad Helix antenna -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12 channel receiver 12 channel receiver -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nav aid database - YES Nav aid database - YES -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Conversion calculator - NO Conversion calculator - YES -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Belt clip included - NO Belt clip included - YES -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wrist strap - NO Wrist strap - YES -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Joystick - NO Joystick - YES -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Military spec construction - NO Military spec construction - YES -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Submersible - YES IPX-7 std. Submersible - YES - JIS-7 std. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There it is, Folks! Proof positive that Bobsprit is ignorant, opinionated, and wrong. He's a liar and everyone knows it. He has an overpriced and underfeatured Garmin 76 which doesn't have too many more features than the Garmin 72 described above. (Check the West catalogue and see for yourself if you don't believe me!) Bobsprit is clearly jealous of my informed and smart purchase that relegates his bargain bin "gift" to 'does not compare favorably' status. S.Simon - Master Mariner |
