Not being a smartass, but it depends on what you're looking for. Quick
no-brainer would be the Catalina 38, a S&S design that Catalina Yachts
bought on the cheap after another manufacturer tried to make a go of it and
failed.

Some would also claim the Catalina(Capri?) 37, a one-design racer.

38,...it doesn't look or act like a Catalina...we almost bought one when =

As a Cruiser; Catalins 34 short rig. That's my choice, hands down

A LOT of good boats had leaky ports. It's a pretty common problem not
particular in the least to Catalina.
Best Catalina is the 36. Prefer it over the 34 because it's lines are a bit
sweeter. I hardly consider the S&S 38 a "true" Catalina.
The 42 is also probably one of the best coastal liveaboard deals on the market.

I almost bought a Catalina 38 some years back
in San Francisco. It had too much tumblehome
for my tastes, but I liked the boat. This one
had oversized winches that I thought I could
take off to recoup a big chunk of the purchase
price.

I;ve sailed the 22 (keel version), 25, 27, 270
(new vesion of the 27), the 30, and the 34.

I was impressed with the 25 and 30, which although
they are slow boats, they were fairly comfortable.

The other thing I like about the boats is the fact
that there are so many. There is a market for them
with predictable prices. Which means you can sell
them--unlike many other boats that have small to
zero market value.

I didn't know they had a short rig. I've
sailed these boats quite a bit, my only
complaint being, they are very slow compared
to their competition--like the O'Day 35.
This was in San Francisco Bay conditions
were there was plenty of wind.

Why the short rig Thom?

There is no best Catalina design. In order to have
a best designer one must have a vessel designed
by a reputable naval architect such as Wm. Tripp,
Jim Jackett, Halsey Herschoff, etc.

Who even knows who designs the Catalinas other
than some dufuss at Morgan Yacht?

The Catilina 22. They sold nearly 10,000 I think, one of the best entry
level sailboats of all time.
