Best Catalina design?
So you are saying Morgan didn't create good designs?

What's the best Catalina design? The Capri 37. Not very roomy for it's length but they're not expensive and they sail great. Very good looking boat too IMHO. I wouldn't disagree that the Catalina 22 is one of the great designs, if allowances are made for era. In it's day it was the best trailerable cruiser, but now I think there are dozens of better boats. If your criteria are cruisability and cost, then the Catalina 30 should be considered. Not to take around Cape Horn, of course. Fresh Breezes- Doug King |

Poor old Charlie never designed anything of note.
A few of his older designs had a virtue or two but, overall, Charlie Morgan isn't listed among the respected naval architects. S.Simon "The Carrolls" wrote in message ... I like the Catalina 30 too. I was very
impressed with the amount of space it had. It is a nice little cruiser. I've seen the Catalina 36 from the outside and I love the way it looks, but I never sailed one. They tend to be expensive. I've sailed the Capri 22 and loved it, but it was way over canvased for SF bay. I recommended they cut two feet off the boom. Later someone had the sense to put cut used Rhodes 18 mains and that helped. Tell us more about the Capri 37. If it is like the Capri 22 I bet I'd love it. What do they sell for? Doug, That was worth 5 pts.
I researched the boat. It rates between 72 and 75. Those are fabulous numbers, and it is a fabulous looking boat. Thanks for bringing it into the discussion. http://www.sailboatowners.com/boats/...4&fno=20&bts=T Bart DSK wrote N1EE wrote: What's the best Catalina design? The Capri 37. A very good friend owned a 30. He loved it. It sailed
quite nicely. I've sailed dozens of time on a 36 in the bay. Works great single reefed and 100% jib. "N1EE" wrote in message om... I like the Catalina 30 too. The worst thing you can say about it (or most Catalinas) is that it's so successful that there's too many of them. RB |

I haven't sailed one, but apparently some of the people who have weren't horribly impressed. http://old.cruisingworld.com/forums/...x.pl?read=6861 I can't believe a J35 would outsail one very often or by very much, but then the Express 37 and the Schock 35 are both pretty fast boats with real cabins. A Mumm 36 would leave it in the dust. They all cost more too. The Capri 37 is pretty much a big daysailor, but it would be possible to use some amenities in the cabin. It's a Grand Prix styled boat but it's really not Grand Prix fast... but watching them sail in the Congressional Cup and some of the other events that use them, they look like a lot of fun to sail.
