Best Catalina design?

That was my feeling. You can't
one design race them, so that
leaves PHRF--which might be fun,
day sailing, and overnight
cruising--or if you are a hard
core sailor, extended cruising
--since it is weak on the inside
and cramped.

I'd love to try one out. And
the price is low because of the
competition. It would be a good
boat for having fun, without
breaking your wallet, and a bad
boat to impress the ladies. I
can hear them complaining. "But
there is nothing on the inside..."

The Capri 37 is pretty much a
big daysailor, but it would be
possible to use some amenities in
the cabin. It's a Grand Prix styled
boat but it's really not Grand Prix
fast... but watching them sail in
the Congressional Cup and some of
the other events that use them,
they look like a lot of fun to sail.

Yea, right.

Poor old Charlie never designed anything of note.

A few of his older designs had a virtue or two but,
overall, Charlie Morgan isn't listed among the respected
naval architects.

So you are saying Morgan didn't create good designs?

There is no best Catalina design. In order to have
a best designer one must have a vessel designed
by a reputable naval architect such as Wm. Tripp,
Jim Jackett, Halsey Herschoff, etc.

Who even knows who designs the Catalinas other
than some dufuss at Morgan Yacht?

Yes. There was one moored down from us last summer.

I don't know how reliable this info is, but supposedly it
is a Morgan design built by a different company (S&J) and
offered for completion as a kit. A handsome boat, I never
saw it sailing so can't offer any opinion on that. If they
were completed as kits, then some will be awesome and some
will be quite rough.
