That's not correct. IBS is in no way a harbinger of either
cancer nor UC. However, it is a disabling disease for many people. It's one of the leading causes of workplace absense. Incorrect, Jonathan. Many patients with IBS develop UC and many patients with UC develope Chrons. No one knows why, just as no one can find a full genetic link with these diseases. Cancer is a higher risk due to steroid based drugs employed in the treatments and weakened imune systems. UC patients off-meds are still 20 times more likely to devlope colon cancer. The reason I know about this is that two people in my life suffered from IBS and UC. Both suffered from IBS prior to full blown UC. One of them is dead. If someone in your life has IBS or UC there is an excellent Newsgroup where you can get support and advise. Try Alt.Support.Crohns-Colitis. This is why I can't get into a trolling war with Donal with a disease at the center. RB |
Bobsprit = IBS
Irritating Bull ****
"Donal" wrote in message ... "Bobsprit" wrote in message ... Pity. Irritable Bowel Syndrome would have suited you. IBS is a disabling illness for some patients. Many find that it eventually leads to an ultimate diagnosis of UC, which often require multiple surgeries and meds that leave some prone to various types of cancer. Something to joke about or wish on someone? Maybe for Donal or Neal. C'mon. You know that it would have suited you! An asshole with irritable bowel syndrome would be too funny. We'd have piles of laughs! Regards Donal -- |

It's a matter of semantics. "Own" implies that you have more or less exclusive use of and control over the subject in question. I'm glad you're pleased with your lot in life. Many with more are not. Of course I'm happy! Have you ever taken notice of how much of the world lives? Our cable bills could feed whole villages. Donal and Loco's lame comments over who's boat is better is just plain sad. We are all VERY lucky to have what we have. RB Question is, why are we not happy? |

Question is, why are we not happy? Happiness is a very relative term. For some people simple mortality is enough to plague any chance for true happiness. I often envy simple folk who seem satisfied with a modest lifestyle and a hard job. I think television and the media in general programs the vast majority to constantly seek to "upgrade" every aspect of their lives. I've never upgraded anything. I only seek a new experience when I buy something new, better or worse. For me that is what's fun. This is what Donal and many others simply don't get. I taunt him with my "better boat" but in truth there's no such thing. If I owned a rowboat I'd still be a lucky fellow. A true key to happiness is genuine perspective. RB |

nothing to do with reality. You're talking about anecdotal evidence vs. actual reliable data. "Bobsprit" wrote in message ... That's not correct. IBS is in no way a harbinger of either cancer nor UC. "Bobsprit" wrote in message ... This is why I can't get into a trolling war with Donal with a disease at the center. Nonsense! You will just have to try harder. I'd behave a bit more sympathetically if *I* didn't also have to "dissappear" from the ng occassionally. However, there is no point in being a wimp about it. This is Usenet. You cannot portray yourself as the most obnoxious person on the planet - and then expect sympathy because you have some, unidentified, illness. Grow up, you big baby! You will get no sympathy here. You are completely and totally wrong. alt.whatever has
nothing to do with reality. You're talking about anecdotal evidence vs. actual reliable data. I have been dealing with UC for 22 years. I'm quite informed on the subject, including familial link data, cancer statistics and new treatments, including the Austrialian anti-biotic cocktail that was tested with some success on UC patients. Because of a sad occurence I know quite a bit about the realities and devestating effects of these diseases. I have no wish to debate them tit-for-tat in this forum. Should you want to know more, e-mail me directly. I also have info on a new med released last year that is having some success for IBS and UC, though it's expensive. RB |

You're talking about anecdotal
evidence vs. actual reliable data. Because of the highly variable symptoms for UC and IBS, just about every study made has been based on anecdotal data, inlcuding the familial link statistics cited recently at 15-20%, below the keying factor. As for cancer rates, IBS patients have a higher rate and UC patients are told to get scoped twice as often for just this reason. A person with UC needs to be scoped at a younger age as well. Some doctors suggest 35 as a starting point. Here's a link. http://ibscrohns.about.com/library/b...itiscancer.htm And this from the CFSN site: Irritable bowel syndrome is an epidemic in the United States. More than 5% of the population is afflicted by "idiopathic" (cause unknown) bowel discomfort, urgency, and diarrhea type symptoms. IBS can progress to colitis, but is different in that colonoscopy finds no obvious pathological changes in the bowel. RB |
