| Spoken like the true sailor you are. Do you take the Subaru with you?
|
| The reason my handheld gets WX use is because if I get up early I don't

| there are times I want to get WX but maintain radio watch on 16.

I'm betting Scotty will get a Uniden or a low end Icom at best.
What am I saying? He'll get a Hummingbird!

Sniffle...that's hitting below the belt!
I also have an Icom M1 with a dead battery I refuse to replace!
The Simrad can be dropped onto concrete and survive, which is where I'll use it
most!

http://www.rigpix.com/protrx/simrad_ht50.htm

and the Simrad also came with a serious charger mount wired for DC or AC,
unlike my crappy Icom!
It's quite heavy for a small radio with all of it's metal. Hope I don't get hit
by lightening!
tested it on the Whitestone Bridge yesterday and got Execution Rock very
clearly. The Icom does as well, but the battery life was poor.
Also in the Simrad box, the #1200 battery, which I'm sure was a mistake. It was
loose, wrapped in plastic and not listed in the package contents. I'll use the
#700 battery 1st.

Wow, so you're saying that your new radio can receive from 6 miles away when its up 140
feet? That's impressive!

I guess that wasn't the weather channel.

From the inside of a Mercedes 500 doing 80, yep!

Oh yes, I forgot, you can outrun the radio waves in a Mercedes.

Receiving in a car shouldn't be a problem unless you're locked in the trunk. I often use
my old Apelco (the one resurrected from the dead after being submerged for a hour or so,
and has a home made battery pack) in the car because my route to the marina varies if the
harbor is shut down during an LNG delivery. Not only is there a "moving safety zone"
around the tanker, but the Tobin Bridge is closed and cleared, with snipers positioned.

BTW, my primary handheld is a Standard HX460. I don't know how it compares to the Simrad,
but it is metal, seems rather tough, its submersible, comes with 1100 mAh battery plus
AC/DC chargers, and it has WX band.

I'm familiar with it. Very tough radio.
