Mr. H. finally got home, turns out he actually has an elbow for the hose.
Talk about procrastination! He's going to cut out the kink and put in the
elbow. We'll see how that works. I'll keep the hose size in mind, on the
other boats the hose was 1", this one is 1 1/2 or 2"!

Bleach kills critters, but it's also rather corrosive on lots of other
things. My advice is to never use bleach on anything on a boat, unless
you have very carefully prepared both the object to be bleached and the
surrounding area. More trouble than it's worth IMHO. And despite all well
intentioned advice to the contrary, putting bleach down a marine head is
one of the worst things you can do to the whole sanitation system.

It is illegal to drain the ice chest to the bilge on the Great Lakes, well, on the Canadian side anyway. I am assuming it's the same on your side. Of course this doesn't bother me too much as mine does the same.

I use vinegar about once a month on the terlet, works great keeping it
clean. I know what you mean about bleach, I save it for scrubbing off my
formica counters...eats up the sponges too!

Oz is righ,t too big a hose allows gunk to build up on the walls.

metal fittings.

You can use peroxide type cleaners (Napisan type) with no worries.
Bleach should not be a problem on sanitation systems as the plastics
*should* be chemical resistant. In any case, bleach has a relatively low
attack rate on PV. Acids are never a good idea because of the damage
they do to any metal fittings (such as bronze through hulls). The damge
contines long after the inital exposure beacuse of the loss of oxidation.

A couple of years ago, we had a problem with a "taint" in the drinking
water. Even hot drinks tasted terrible! I used Beer Pipe Cleaner(which is
essentially *strong* bleach) and the problem hasn't returned.


Perhaps you should ask Peggy (rec.boats???) - she seems to know about these
things.
