Why do you assume that radar would not have existed without the Brits help? Its true that
significant improvements where made in England, especially to the cavity magnetron (itself an American invention), but this was a technology rapidly advancing in a number of sites. In the US, the Radiation Laboratory (or RadLab) at MIT was funded at the same level as the Manhattan Project, and surely would have duplicated most of the British work in a matter of months. Given the significance of the work, of course, that several months was rather important. "The_navigator©" wrote in message ... What would the US have built without being given the design of the supercharged merlin engine? What about radar? Makes one wonder... Cheers MC Donal wrote: "Thom Stewart" wrote in message ... That's funny I though thge cavity magentron was invented by the British
and smuggled to the US in a sock. Come to think of it, the British seemed to like that ploy as they also used it to smuggle penicillin to the US as well! The Cavity Magnetron was invented by A W Hull and General Electric in 1921. A number of
others, including Germans, contributed enhancements over the years. The British version had greatly increased power and was the first practical for use in airplanes. It was certainly a major step forward, but not the "invention of radar" as many would have it. The discovery of penicillin was probably a more unique discovery. "The_navigator©" wrote in message ...
