We are thinking of putting our 36' sailboat down in
Barnegat/Manahawkin NJ area from the Peconic Bay in LI. I have a couple of questions to any sailboat owners in the area: 1) What is the the sailing like? 2) With a 5 foot draft, any depth issues? 3) Is it overcrowded with motor boaters? 4) How is ocean access? Thanks for all the info. |

![]() We are thinking of putting our 36' sailboat down in Barnegat/Manahawkin NJ area from the Peconic Bay in LI. Funny you ask, I am making the opposite move because of your concerns below. I am currently in Mantoloking, a little north of your area. I have a couple of questions to any sailboat owners in the area: 1) What is the the sailing like? Great wind, more of it and more consistent than LIS or Peconic Bay. Lots of shallows. 2) With a 5 foot draft, any depth issues? Plenty. Look at a chart. The good thing is not much tide. 3) Is it overcrowded with motor boaters? Not over much down south where Scout is. It is very pretty and natural down there. Up by me we have many cigarette style boats which put an end to conversation when they go by. 4) How is ocean access? Fine. Don't let people scare you about the inlets, although they can be tricky when an ebb meets a big swell and they do have current. Thanks for all the info. Good luck. Why are you leaving the Peconic Bay area? |
