Who'll Bet on Bob?

Well, this weekend was supposed to be a trip from City Island to Coney Island
to dip a toe in the ocean, and the weather was perfect. Looks like he didn't
make it, but not to fear. Next weekend is the long-awaited 75 mile trip to
nowhere. Jeff has provided him some valuable navigation tips. Now it is up to
him to cast off the lines and go, Alien girls and all.

Who thinks he will really do it? My money is on him. He is a man of his word;
what he says he'll do, he does.

This summer, Suzanne is working at a hospital, going to school and voluntering
at an old age home. It's been near impossible for us to do more than catch a
lot of day and night sails.
Next weekend will be our first chance to take the boat for a bit more distance,
and we're looking forward to it.
Her school/work schedule was part of the reason we'd planned to wait until 2005
to replace Ghost. Then the great deal on the C&C came along...and we jumped at
it. We're not regretting it, but I sure wish we could line up more than two
days to sail.

I think he will try, but there are far too many reasons why he might bag it. RB has

Bob.. can't you leave Friday night? Use radar and GPS.. have Suzanne plot
course and navigate. You'll make up distance to allow an easier schedule the
following day. Even if you only sail or motorsail [recommended] from let's
say 1800hrs to 2200 hrs at a steady 5 kts.... it will reduce the passage by
20 nautical miles. Drop hook.. grab some rest and be ready to weigh that
chrome anchor early next day.

Being a nurse (we have several friends who are nurses) is a great job and an
important one. Due to the huge shortage, Suzanne has already been hired in

It's an important job these days and it's sad that anyone thinks caring for the

Nevertheless, however much the compos mentis elderly might thank
for the caring, generally the job is thankless. Like many
vocations, one does it for motivations which are not primarily
monetary nor opportunity-driven.

Suzanne will ALWAYS be working somewhere that is incredibly short staffed,

I wonder if you've ever been to a private hospital. She's at St. Francis now.
They are not short staffed. Pay is high and benefits are great. She's loving it
and she's doing the dirty work!
I consider starting salary of 70+ to be pretty reasonable for a person straight
out of nursing school. Some hospitals even pay more. Obviously, if you're a
crappy student, you go to Jamaica Hosp. and get 55K.
Suzanne is straight A's, scoring higher than 100% on most of her tests. She
speaks several languages and loves helping the sick.
Any medical job is tough, hard work. The money can always be better. But that's
not all there is. We have enough resources to afford her schooling and new
career. In fact, neither of us need to work for a while.

Good for you owning up to your responsibilities but there

depressing. I know, I've been there. It's not like with a
young person who can recover. It is a continued downhill
slide that cannot be reversed and it's depressing as hell.

Katy, what do nurses make in your area? Pay ranges from upper 40's to low six
figures here. I've been told Nurses make much less in most other states. The
shortage is critical here.

The only up side for Bobadil is that she will lose weight. Unfortunately it will
be at the expense of her health and happiness.

Not so...nurses tend to be stress eaters...one of the reasons health care is so much more expensive for the nursing field is
because of the obesity levels. Along with the obesity levels comes a high incidence of Workman's Comp claims. I battled our
insurance carriers this past year in a attempt to get our rates down to no avail. I even proposed in-house weight loss clinics,
motivational programs, etc. and showed them our low filing rate for W/C but the nationwide figures are what they held to.

Support that claim. Associate degree RN's generally start at 20/hr...if they're lucky...a four year degreed nurse will start
slightly higher. Private hospitals generally pay the going rate in the area. Also, while it's nice to have "A's", that is not
an indicator of nursing ability. A nurse can be book smart but really poor on the floor. Common sense and practical;ity are
what I look for when I hire nurse's, not book smarts. Nurse practitioner's, with a MS in their particular field, command the
salaries you speak of and are able to prescribe some drugs and treatments much like a PA does.

It is an important job, and there are certainly some times of joy mixed in with the sorrow, but until you've been there for a
long time you have no idea of the thanklessness of the job. The burnout ratio attests to that fact. It is usually better to
start out on a new enterprise with eyes wide open. Naivete and Pollyanism will only set yopu up for heartbreak and despair
later on when the reality sets in.

salaries you speak of and are able to prescribe some drugs and treatments much

A close friend just became a nurse practitioner after being a well paid RN for
7 years. Her salary bump was tiny. She's barely making 100K. I asked her about
and she said she could earn far more if she left the city hosp. She loves it
there and money just isn't the main issue (it shouldn't be) in the field. As an
RN, she turned down chances for critical care home nursing positions that would
have paid her highly. Again, this is a white woman in a field that seems to be
populated by people of color, heavy accents and poor language skills. Where
Suzanne is working now, NO nurse ever touches a bedpan.

\No, it's not depressing taking care of the elderly. What's depressing is the
fact that when you're to that point, people

Katy, my good friend (she just became a nurse practitioner) has been to many of
her patients funerals, invited by the patient or family. Certainly this is NOT
the norm. She's a warm, engaging person, who cares about people and it comes
across. I don't think there's anything she'd rather do. Suzanne is bent in the
same direction. On her first day, she and two other first time CCPs had to deal
with a patient who was bleeding badly. They had to leave the room. Suzanne
handled it, and put the patient at ease. Whenever he saw her after that, he'd
say "please smile for me, you're the only sunlight in this place." She was very
touched by that.
Last night she had her first bout of post mortem care. Rough night for her, but
she is determined to be great in her new career. Like most things in life,
following the averages is not reccomended.
