Default Ericson 34....????

A friend just called asking if I know anything about them. He's looking at
one for sale. I told him I know little to nothing about them but I would ask
around.

Any comments?

Thanx... I heard there were issues concerning the balsa cored decks.

Ericson deck problems are very common.

Thanks XR

This person is not a racer... he has never raced and is looking at for a
large coastal cruiser. I believe it was an older vintage 34T... but I'm not
positive about the designation. The photos show well and the price is
right... but I thought I had heard about deck problems and wanted to
confirm that as well as general information. The only Ericson I've been on
was a 27 footer.. again not positive of the actual size.. could be a 28...
in the Bahamas, Exuma Cays. I wasn't impressed with the Ericson, but then
again..... we were chartering a 38 Cabo Rico at the time out of Eleuthra.
Now that's a really nice boat!

| Depends. Which model, or rather what year? The mid-80s boats were fast,
| generally used in club racing and offshore events, but still had a
| wonderfully laid-out cruising interior of good quality. The later Pacific
| Seacraft-built boats are nice, but costly and really no advantage over the
| older ones apart from age. Of course a survey is a good idea on any older
| Ericson. Water in the deck core can be a problem.

the mid-80s Ericsons make excellent coastal cruisers. They are
weatherly, have a kind motion in a seaway, and are very strong. IF the deck
is solid, I'd not hesitate to buy one. I like the older Ericsons very much,
but that's just my opinion.

I don't know about the mid-80s Ericsons, but the older ones had solid glass in
the way of all thrubolted deck hardware. The core was tapered down to a doubled
solid glass laminate. This was also done around everything bolted through the
hull. It is the proper way to build a cored fiberglass boat. Substituting
plywood for core is better than thru bolting the core, but it's a poor second
best.
