Default Do you need permission to kayak/canoe on UK rivers?

I now live about a mile from the River Avon and would like to take up
canoeing again after many many years. Do I need permission to canoe?
Are there any permits, restrictions, etc I need to be aware of?

Regards,
Jason.

It is vital that you check the area you wish to canoe in with
your local council's rights of way officer, who can help with most sections
of river that pass through their patch.
You can also try the N.R.A. Don't think you can just
paddle anywhere there are land rights to contend with
and also rolling rights to the water. I have heard of people
in our area who have been shot at !!

In short the answer is.. Yes... you do need to get permission from the
relevant land owners / riparian right holders. The access situation on some
rivers is on a knife edge. Thanks for asking the question before you got on
the water - too many don't and jeopardise the access negotiations.

The British Canoe union has access officers which cover pretty much the
whole country, and they are the people that know the local situation. Visit
the BCU website at www.bcu.org.uk

BTW - Which river Avon - there are a few. Some stretches on the Bristol/Bath
one are regarded as navigations.
