Default Kayak skirt measurement

I picked up a used kayak this winter, and am now looking to find a
spray skirt for it. I am having a hell of a time finding out info on
the company that makes my boat, or the boat itself. I got an amazing
deal on the boat, and figured it would be a good chance to get me
started in the sport.
My question now is, how do I measure out for a skirt?
All the skirts I have seen online give a single number for the size.
What makes up this number?

Measure the gross length and width of the cockpit coaming, then measure the
circumference. Most skirts will show a range of either length x width or
circumference they will fit. If the package doesn't specify, take out the skirt
and measure it.

Here in Ol' Germany, I would cut a sheet of paper in the shape of my
kayak seat porthole and take it to a lokal dealer who does produce kayak
skirts (http://www.zoelzer.de). The result would be a perfectly fitting
skirt for my kayak, no matter the brand.
