These are my favorite ships maybe because my father,
grandfather and grandgrandfather sailed them for a living.
They brought cargo from one place to another in the shallow
waters in the north of The Netherlands.
They are called skûtsjes and have a flatbottom.
In stead of a keel they have leeboards.
Still every year the perfectly conservated ships
have a competition in racing against each other, its great to see
how people handle this ships.
We call that event every year "Skûtsjesilen" you see here some pictures from
