"Randy Kotuby" wrote in message ... Hi Randy, The vessel on the left of the photo is a Turret-decked steamer. Turret-decked steamers were introduced in the 1890's to minimise toll charges whilst in transit through the Suez Canal. The Suez Canal charges were related to the width of the upper deck and so the narrower upper deck qualified the vessel for lower dues. The method of calculating Suez Canal Charges changed in 1911 and this, coupled with the mysterious loss of several ships of this design, meant that no more Turret-decked ships were built after that date. For photo of a shipowners model of Turret-decked ship, SS Nonsuch, at the National Maritime Museum, London, follow link: http://www.nmm.ac.uk/collections/dis...ture=1#content Regards, Tuppence |
