The vessel on the left of the photo is a Turret-decked steamer.
Turret-decked steamers were introduced in the 1890's to minimise toll
charges whilst in transit through the Suez Canal. The Suez Canal charges
were related to the width of the upper deck and so the narrower upper deck
qualified the vessel for lower dues. The method of calculating Suez Canal
Charges changed in 1911 and this, coupled with the mysterious loss of
several ships of this design, meant that no more Turret-decked ships were
built after that date.
