Nobel Laureates Endorse Obama
An Open Letter to the American People
August 23, 2008 This year's presidential election is among the most significant in our nation's history. The country urgently needs a visionary leader who can ensure the future of our traditional strengths in science and technology and who can harness those strengths to address many of our greatest problems: energy, disease, climate change, security, and economic competitiveness. We are convinced that Senator Barack Obama is such a leader, and we urge you to join us in supporting him. ***During the administration of George W. Bush, vital parts of our country's scientific enterprise have been damaged by stagnant or declining federal support. The government's scientific advisory process has been distorted by political considerations. As a result, our once dominant position in the scientific world has been shaken and our prosperity has been placed at risk. We have lost time critical for the development of new ways to provide energy, treat disease, reverse climate change, strengthen our security, and improve our economy.*** We have watched Senator Obama's approach to these issues with admiration. We especially applaud his emphasis during the campaign on the power of science and technology to enhance our nation's competitiveness. In particular, we support the measures he plans to take – through new initiatives in education and training, expanded research funding, an unbiased process for obtaining scientific advice, and an appropriate balance of basic and applied research – to meet the nation's and the world's most urgent needs. Senator Obama understands that Presidential leadership and federal investments in science and technology are crucial elements in successful governance of the world's leading country. We hope you will join us as we work together to ensure his election in November. Signed, Alexei Abrikosov Physics 2003 Roger Guillemin Medicine 1977 Peter Agre Chemistry 2003 John L. I have known many brilliant physicists including Dirac (OK, I talked to him at a party) and although they may be brilliant at physics, I wouldnt trust many of them to be able to tie their own shoes. Unfortunately, many "brilliant" people are sorta "idiot savants" brilliant in a narrow field and incompetent at life in general. Harry is obviously awestruck at Nobel Prize winning in the same way that most Dems feel that celebs somehow have some special knowledge of politics. Quite frankly, I find this sort of thing to be the same as celebrity worship, which is all we can expect from Dems. |

I have an old and close friend in his early 50's now in Afghanistan who is finishing up his career in the Army. When I first met him in 1988, he was a a lieutenant hoping for promotion to captain in a year or two. He's finishing up as a full colonel. He was in desert storm, and in Dubya's war against Iraq, and now he's in Afghanistan. I guess he's done well, and if so, he earned it. Herring seems about as dumb a military officer as I have ever seen. |

He was first-rate. I've run into active and retired officers throughout my life. When my first father in law died, his lawyer turned out to be a retired Army general He was a class act, too. When I lived in West Virginia, my best friend was an Army captain, an M.D., who was the examining physician for the draft and for recruitment. He worked his butt off to help slightly underperforming or underqualified guys with no real future find one in the military. Class act. I probably have a dozen more classy officers with whom I have crossed paths. Herring is trash. |

Harry, "LTC" (O-5) Ins't that easy to come up with regardless of they time you spend in the Army The Army doesn't give 0-5 away, you do have to earn it. Harry's just mad 'cause I won't talk to him. He'll get over it. Besides that, he's a little bit jealous. You have a highly overinflated ego. I wouldn't give a schitt if you got hit by a semi on I-95. You have nothing to offer here or anywhere else, and you prove it with every post. You're the worst excuse for an Army officer I have ever encountered.- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - Well, Harry. I may be totally un informed on your interaction with the Mil. But during my 3 yr. stint, I've encountered many an officer (W's as well as O's) and maybe not at that time, but in the long term I've been impressed with the lot of them, especially those who started out as grunts. I wouldn't think that JohnH would be any different. My opinion. One has to wonder about Harry's civilian "encounters" with army officers. |

I'd like to see her switch places with McCain on the ticket. Palin has more executive experience than Obama, Biden and McCain combined. Yeah? George W. Bush had "exec experience." He turned out to be a disaster. What is important is knowledge, intelligence, and judgment. McPalin has none of that. Why do you have to denigrate everyone by making fun of their names? Seems petty and childish. Is that what they taught you at Yale? When you can't win the argument start calling names? Can't win the argument? Here's a "shout-out" for ya: Palin is an idiot. McCain has nothing with which to appeal to voters except negativity. If Obama were white, he'd be 15 points ahead now and on election day. If Obama were white he would be sitting in his Senate office wondering why his party didn't want him to be the nominee just because he wanted to pull the country towards socialism first and communism second. |
