The high: Today is the birthday of Leonardo da Vinci, the Italian genius whose work epitomized the Renaissance humanist ideal and whose Last Supper (1495–98) and Mona Lisa (1503–06) are widely influential paintings. Born in 1452. The low: On this day in 1955, Roy Croc opened the first McDonald's franchise in Des Plaines, Illinois, and in that same year started the McDonald's Corporation. :) Yup, It made us FAT. (most of us) If you watch any footage of the general population from that time and prior, you'll notice that most folks are a normal weight. Go to any locale where people populate these days and notice that most everyone has "junk in the trunk" Why? Fast food, and drive through windows. Not the only cause, but a major playa. I know, Im as guilty as anyone. btw, I think its *rAy* Croc. He bought the rights for the franchise from the McDonald brothers (or bought the actual 1st store) They had the idea/concept of "Fast food". Ray was smart enough to know that idea would work anywhere and capitalized on it. Dave Thomas and Col. Sanders were pretty smart fellows as well in that regard. db It was Ray. I screwed up his name on my post. Actually, I wasn't thinking about how much fat was in McDonald's crap food, but how very bad it was in terms of *taste*! That's why I picked it as a "low point" of civilization. But you are absolutely correct in pointing out the problems in eating what most fast food joints serve up. |
