Throw Vista away.
On CNBC this morning, there was a segment on Vista and the guests to a
person said Vista is an unmitigated diaster and may be a sign of the
begining of the end for Microsoft as a market leader.

I just spoke with a Toshiba representative about their laptops. They're
selling many with XP instead of Vista, and it's possible to get them that
way right now. No extra charge, of course. The Satellite X205-SLi5 looks
interesting.

I researched Lenovo and they seem to have an excellent track record
selling and servicing to business users. They recently have set up an
educational division. My son's new school offers Dell, Apple and Lenovo
at an educational discount. When i asked the manager of the Computer
sales dept at my son's school, which PC he would recommend he said they
had substantially less problems with Lenovo.

They seem awfully expensive compared to the Toshibas. That's based on just
a cursory look. Since I'm no longer teaching, I'd probably not get a
discount. I'll look into CDW and see what they're getting.

Do they come without Vista?

Well, they have one hell of a long way to go before they are not the
market leader, but . . .

With a several year build cycle for an OS, they sure as hell can't afford
to blow another one. It's also worth noting, MS Office 2007 isn't
burning up the sales either, and those are the only two product lines MS
makes money on.

Really weird:

I tried MS Office 2007, or at least parts of it. I don't much like WORD
to begin with, but at least WORD in the Office 2003 suite was usable. I
couldn't make heads or tails out of WORD 2007. But, and this is the
weird part, the WORD application in the Office 2008 suite for Macs works
very well for me and is easy to use. So, Word 2008 is what I use on my Mac.

When I am working on my PC and need a word processor, I use Wordperfect
and simply autosave all my files in WORD 2003 format, which just about
everyone can handle. In fact, there seems to be no problems
interchanging these files among the various computers, operating
systems, clients, et cetera. Part of that is that when I write for $$$,
my output is a simple text file. If it is going to be put into a
brochure or suchlike, a graphics artist does the conversions. Makes my
life easier.

About the only MS Office product I use on my PC is Excel, from the 2003
Suite. I never liked MS's presentation program, so now I use the much
better one that came with my Mac. My Mac laptop is near perfect for
desktop presentations, and for $20 or so, I got a Mac remote to control
the laptop.

InfoWorld and CIO are all saying YES.

Yup. Nothing but.

Just for Dick....... ~giggle~

Must be something in what remains of that Atlanta water supply, since
both Reggie and Loogie claim to live in that area, and both of them are
the predominant trolls here. And I see second hand that poor dumb Loogie
is *still* trying to get me to notice, poor little **** that he is. Too
much skanky homebrew beer and pot, maybe.

How cute. Why don't you take your bull****, lies and insults to
Chuck's group? What a ****ing pussy, hiding behind your Bozo'z bin
name calling like a little school girl.
