I attended a game in Oxford, MS during the 1960s. Don't remember if he could pass or not, but he was an exciting runner. Really all over the field. Would probably run 150 yards to make a 50 yard gain. What a legacy with his sons. Yes, Archie had one helluva strong arm and accurate too But with the Saints, he never had a decent line and seldom a decent receiver. He spent his entire career scrambling. He was an all around, do everything well, make things happen, athlete. And he had good success at Ole Miss because he had a team around him. Unfortunately, he never had that luxury in all his years with the Saints. In most cases, he was the only reason fans went to the ball games. One losing season after another, Saints fans would go (sometimes with paper bags over their heads) only to watch Archie scramble and get himself out of one impossible situation after another. He was a Super Bowl caliber Quarterback who played year after year for an otherwise dismal and mismanaged team. But he loved New Orleans and he never complained even once that I know of. He's a fine fellow with a great attitude both on and off the field. Rick |
