Most of the fishing spots I frequent aren't that far from the launch
ramps I use, 10-15 miles would be the furthest, I'd guess. The Bay is
less than 10 miles across from me, and when I trailer down to the
Patuxent to the launch ramp there, there are dozens of spots to fish
within five miles of that ramp. I don't see any reason to run a boat
at high speeds for two or three or four hours to catch the same sort
of fish I can catch locally.

When I lived in Florida, I mostly fished in the ICW and the ocean
inlets and within a mile or two of shore. Great fishing. I did run
offshore for the reefs, but, again, there was no need to do that when
you could catch a 40-pound kingfish 300 yards off the beach.

Logical explanation as to why those numbers are as they are. I do think
you have too much boat for the job, though.


We have a lot of hard chop up here. The 21' Parker deep vee handles it
better than the 21' mod vee. Two of the very best guides on the Bay have
similar boats. They're really the ideal fishing boat for this area,
assuming you are going out solo or with a couple of other guys.

Your Etec, with what? 200hp? is moving a *much* lighter boat at 9 kts,
burning roughly the same amount of fuel as a 120 hp diesel pushing a 30,000
lb boat at 8 kts.

Plus .... (hehehe) let me know when your Etec will need a rebuild. At
6000 hrs, the little Leyman diesel in the GB is about halfway through it's
service life before rebuild according to American Diesel.

I was just curious about max fuel rate on a diesel compared to gas
engine at the same WOT speed.

Let me put it this way - if there was a 200 hp diesel outboard
available, would it be more efficient at 45 mph than a gas engine at
the same speed.

Another curiosity question - what's the reduction ratio on the
transmission for the GB?

No question about it. You can look up the BTU numbers of gas vs. diesel
