Yes. Touchdown for diesel power! Similar amount of fuel used, moving a much heavier boat with much less horsepower. Case closed. Well, not really. I can't see your GB going 50 mph on the way to the fishing grounds. Case reopened. :) Now wait a cottin' pickin' minute. Your're getting as slippery as Harry. Nobody talked about maximum speed. We were comparing fuel burn rates *at* 8-9 kts. and the efficiency of doing so. Your Etec, with what? 200hp? is moving a *much* lighter boat at 9 kts, burning roughly the same amount of fuel as a 120 hp diesel pushing a 30,000 lb boat at 8 kts. Plus .... (hehehe) let me know when your Etec will need a rebuild. At 6000 hrs, the little Leyman diesel in the GB is about halfway through it's service life before rebuild according to American Diesel. How much gas did you burn in your string trimmer? If my math is correct that's about 1.8333333333333 GPH. My guess is that you didn't get that barge above hull speed much. That's about what my ETEC gets WOT. Oil? :-) Huh? Just a dig, notice the :-) |

Most of the fishing spots I frequent aren't that far from the launch ramps I use, 10-15 miles would be the furthest, I'd guess. The Bay is less than 10 miles across from me, and when I trailer down to the Patuxent to the launch ramp there, there are dozens of spots to fish within five miles of that ramp. I don't see any reason to run a boat at high speeds for two or three or four hours to catch the same sort of fish I can catch locally. When I lived in Florida, I mostly fished in the ICW and the ocean inlets and within a mile or two of shore. Great fishing. I did run offshore for the reefs, but, again, there was no need to do that when you could catch a 40-pound kingfish 300 yards off the beach. |

That's just about what Mrs.E.'s boat burns running wide open. Just out of curiosity, what's the speed WOT? 8-8.5 kts. 120hp 28,000 lb boat (empty) more like 30-32k lbs. loaded. I was just trying to point out how misleading Harry's reported "numbers" could be to some. They may be accurate for how he happened to operate his boat last year, but the numbers should not be construed as being typical for that engine or boat. All you have to do is look up fuel burn rates versus RPM for the Yamaha 150 four stroke. Eisboch Misleading? Gee, I have an hour meter and a fuel use meter. At my cruise speed, I seem to burn around 5GPH, and that cruise speed will easily take me to the other side of the bay and back in under an hour. |

I commented that those numbers may be accurate in terms of how you operated *your* boat last season, but should be construed as being typical. Eisboch |

Logical explanation as to why those numbers are as they are. I do think you have too much boat for the job, though. |

Hey...I just dropped my first $900 of the not-yet-here season on the boat. |
