For me, it's because:
Wife buys about 5 calendars every year.
Makes me look at all the pretty pictures to ooh and ah.
Puts one up in the kitchen, and nobody ever looks at it except
in April when somebody notices the calendar says it's January.
And so on. Sort of.
I have ma, dad, 5 brothers and sisters, 7 kids, 2 grandkids so far.
I hate it when I forget their birthdays or anniversaries, because they
nearly always remember mine.

Isn't that what calendars are for? Why does this have to be
automated?

I already need to have these dates down somewhere, besides other
non-fixed appointments, like dentist, doctor. I figure why plug them
into a calendar. Just encourages my wife to buy more calendars.

Nope. If a wall calendar works, it works.
