I have never had the need to open a can of food while in the car or
away
from home. I open my cans with an electric can opener. John may
want
to
look into these new contraptions so he does not have to carry his old
P-38
with him.

You really don't understand JimH.

Which is understandable.

Perhaps he's never gone camping or taken a can on his boat. Or, maybe he
takes a generator camping and on his boat.

You're right.

We did Thanksgiving last year in a place in Las Vegas. The kitchenette at
Hilton Grand Vacation Villas had everything but a can opener. Odd.
Realized that one of the blades on my Swiss Army Knife is basically a
P-38.
Worked well. As to keeping some of the old stuff, Those who served spent
a
lot of time and energy in the service. I did not go to Viet Nam as some
here did, I got a cushy job with airlift wing, fixing radars in a nice air
conditioned shop at Travis AFB. But I still use the necklace and whistle
we
had to wear if on the flight line. I now use it to hold my fishing
license
holder. Here in Nannystate, you have to visibly wear your license.

I don't know what Jimh's problem is. He's bitter about something, and it's
showing.

He's part of the ME generation. They are always feeling put upon for
something. It's our fault for bringing them up that way.

Whatever.

BTW: I did not serve in the military.......but if I did I would not carry a
reminder of it some 40 years later of service in a very unpopular war,
regardless of my opinion of the war.

One sometimes needs to let it go and move on.

I think it is obvious why you and Harry are friends

I guess he feels the same way about his religion. Can you imagine him a
while back allowing Harry to trash Jesus and Christianity without comment
from JimH? I think that's called 'losing the courage of one's convictions'.

After all of JimH's begging and whining for support for his son joining
the military, and the wonderful achievement of making it through basic
training, he now thinks it is foolish for ex-military to have mementos
of their time in the military. I guess he will now join Harry in
bashing those in the military as the rejects of society who could not
make it in the real world.

If I were his son, I'd keep my marksmanship badge well hidden so it didn't
get trashed. I've still got the one I earned in basic training, somewhere
around here, and that damn thing's about 45 years old now!

I guess I should do a John Kerry and find a wall over which to throw those
damn medals, too!

Eisboch is right. You don't understand. You can't be faulted for not
having had the experiences since the draft was probably disbanded by the
time you became eligible. Nothing you or Kanter say can diminish the
pride and memories, good or bad, that servicemen and women have. Just
remember who paid for *Your* freedom, and try to be just a we bit
appreciative .

You are preaching to the choir Jimbo. And don't ever lump me in with
Kanter.

Why not? Have you been misunderstood by me and others?

Yes, they are both very special, the best at everything, and anything
that they don't have or want, no one else should!

It also has absolutely nothing to do with how popular a war is.

crap knowing you don't keep a picture of her, or your special times

Perhaps it is not a reminder of "a war". There was no doubt some great
moments and individuals through out the span of that war, as in any
war. His memories may be more specific than you imagine... Just my
opinion. And guys like you and I who were never there... well, you
know..
