I did have it in the back of my mind that it would be the piston rings
but I thought that I would listen to a few comments first. Thanks everybody! I didn't do a compression check and now the head is off, but there didn't seem to be any loss of power when it was running. Also, it shut down just fine and hasn't run away. I don't see any signs of blow by in the intake or filter, but i do think that there is a hint of diesel in the oil. There is a bit of black on top of the cylinder heads. I think I'm going to replace the piston rings. I'll post the results when finished. |

Cool! while you have the head off you may as well take it to a shop and have the valve guides inspected and new oil seals installed. old valve seals get brittle and can leak oil down though the valves, especially the intake. At least that's what I'd do. |

: I think I'm going to replace the piston rings. I'll post the results when finished. The cylinders should be honed and the pistons replaced if you're going to do that. The ring grooves in the pistons get wider as time goes by and the cylinder walls need smoothing into a circle, again. No need to put new rings on an oblong hole, right? As long as you've taken it apart, pistons and honing are cheap. I don't think so either, but I am not a mechanic, that's for sure. Isn't the cross hatch honing done to produce very microscopic grooves to hold the lubricating oil? Eisboch |
