Every two years or so I assemble a new desktop computer from what I
believe to be the best or fastest or both components generally
available. The vendor from whom I bought the ASUS motherboard had some
good prices on VISTA OEM, so I asked him to tuck in a copy. So, not only
did I buy a copy of VISTA, I bought it from an OEM supplier sans OS
technical support.

The few issues I have had with VISTA have been minor and easy to
resolve. All of my software but one program works just fine on VISTA,
and when I connected up everything, it found all my hardware and
installed all the necessary drives, but for one, and that issue was
easily resolved.

I run this desktop on the bleeding edge. It is full of beta and even
some alpha software, and it has been rock steady.

It is kind of humorous that my actual experience with VISTA has been
relatively trouble-free and a good learning experience while so many of
you are the wimps I suspected you were.

But, then, I'm just an English major.

Who are the wimps? Is anyone who doesn't use Vista a wimp?

don't think Harry would do that because he frowns on it.


That's right. That email address works just fine. I don't check it
often, but it does work.

That will save a lot of confusion and acrimony. Jimh can just tell you his
decisions about everything without getting comments from any others in the

Memory is cheap. Find out what you have in there and add another stick
or two so you have 2 gigs. Were you aware that VISTA with the proper
amount of member does a better job handling several open apps
simultaneously?

I can run Adobe Bridge CS3 and Photoshop CS3, working on photos, and at
the same time run my web browser actively, along with my email program,
and my word processor, and switch between the apps almost
instantaneously. If I also try to burn a DVD at the same time all these
apps are running, the slowdown is noticeable but management, and none of
the apps crash.

Try that with XP.

Plus, even though VISTA 64 is way ahead of its time right now, there are
some great new apps coming that will take advantage of it. As soon as
some start appearing, my current desktop will become a server and I'll
build a new 64-bit box.

The only thing I knew about Wichita (home of Skipper) in those days was
that it was filled with the dumbest right-wingers on the face of the
planet. I'm not sure things have changed much there.

When I started working at the KC Star, there were two threats oft
repeated by the city editor...if you f*cked up, you were sent out to the
western Kansas bureaus, and if you really fu*ked up, you were sent down
to the Wichita bureau.

In those days, The Star was a real newspaper. Sadly, like many other
papers, it is now part of the chain of newspaper mediocrity.

Use that same processor and memory setup and XP will still run faster.
Running a warp speed processor to get the same performance as an XP machine
running a supersonic speed CPU is just masking problems.

You really shouldn't need a state-of-the-art, multi-core, multi
processor, 2 Gig PC just to support the operating system, although I
have to admit that IBM has frequently moved in that direction. Today's
VISTA compatible PCs have more hardware resources available to them
than a corporate mainframe computer 15 years ago. To do what? Browse
the web, type EMAILs, run spreadsheets, play music....
